3 Simple, Yet Effective Home Organization Tips for Back to School

You already know back to school season brings a shift in your schedule, but have you noticed how it also changes the way you use your space at home? A few proactive organizational steps can make all the difference between your home being a place of chaos or calm this fall.

Tip #1: Organize an Efficient & Optimal Entryway

The entryway to your home serves like an airport runway; it's both a takeoff and a landing strip for all the stuff you need to bring along with you each day. Set up dedicated storage in this location for each family member’s keys, shoes, bags, and backpacks. Our family likes to keep sunscreen, sunglasses, and pre-filled water bottles in this area as well. Make sure younger kids can reach their designated hooks and storage areas. Anything you find yourself searching for at the last minute before leaving the house needs a dedicated home near the entryway.

Tip #2: Set Up a Dedicated Space for Self-Service

School aged kids are fully capable of preparing a simple breakfast and packing their own lunches, especially when there’s a dedicated space for those ingredients. This could take the form of a bin in the fridge with pre-cut veggies, fruits, string cheese, and other lunch ingredients. Breakfast bars, oatmeal, yogurt, or other pre-prepped ingredients can be labeled ahead of time to reduce decision fatigue on busy mornings. Make it a weekend habit to count up those units and make sure there are enough of each for five days of packed lunches per family member.

Tip #3: Find & Install a Family Information Center

A family information center can be a huge help in keeping everyone on track. In a household with teens, a shared digital calendar may be most effective. Elementary school kids will benefit from a physical calendar that is displayed where they can easily check it from time to time. A magnetic refrigerator calendar is a popular choice, but a dry erase board or flip-style paper calendar posted in the entryway might be even better. Wall mounted files or a bulletin board can keep membership cards, passes, gift cards, invitations, tickets, and appointment reminders at hand for when they are needed.

Taking proactive steps to organize your home for the back to school season will bring more peace, clarity, and ease into your daily schedule. Consider the ways you use your home and let it serve you well this season.
