Organizing As Self-Care: How Decluttering Promotes Well-Being
Welcome to 2026! Whether our holidays were fun and chaotic, or mellow and peaceful (or a bit of everything!), we all now find ourselves on the starting line of a new year. Maybe you envision embarking on new adventures, changing up your health habits, or simply using more of your vacation days.
Taking the time to get organized not only sets you up for success in these areas, you will also find yourself with more time, space, clarity and freedom to enjoy it all. Here’s how organizing as self-care benefits us far beyond just cutting out clutter:
Saves Time, Energy and Money:
When your items have a place to call home, there is less time spent not only searching for storage, but also having to remember where you stashed them in the first place!
The same goes with your energy levels, both physical and mental. You’re banking both for where they’re really needed, rather than wasting them on the drudgery of playing an annoying version of hide-and-seek with your stuff.
Instead of constantly buying another new pair of jeans or set of batteries or dish towels because you can never find any in your home, you are using what you already have and saving money for more important things down the road.
Encourages Better Habits:
Organizing creates automatic patterns, which make tasks like getting out the door in the morning become more seamless and less chaotic.
It also simplifies healthy choices, granting us more time to meal prep or exercise. A tidy bedroom promotes better sleep and more time to devote to it.
Even baby steps make a difference! Just organizing your entryway table or one junk drawer are each an important part of the decluttering process. Small steps work together to build momentum toward a sustainable set of systems that continually benefit your life.
Fosters Tranquility:
Clutter = over-stimulation, period. The more we edit down our spaces, the more we calm our minds, and who doesn’t want more of that?
Many of us greatly enjoy hosting guests, but sometimes we find that the only thing that stops us is the state of our homes. Having the ability to invite people over at any time is not only freeing, but adds fun to our lives as well.
Decision fatigue is for real! We’ve all found ourselves exhausted at the end of the day by the copious amount of choices constantly in front of us. When we simplify our lives, we are prioritizing decisions that make a deeper impact, and are definitely more fulfilling than always trying to remember where we placed our keys.
Bonus Level:
Author Shira Gill reminds us that, “The antidote to an overstuffed life is quite simply less stuff.” If you need a little motivation, write down a few activities or hobbies you’d like to take up or return to, but life has been feeling too full and crazy to do so. Use this list to inspire you to declutter your life this year—it works!
Don’t trade the stress of a cluttered space with the burden of perfectionism. No one needs that! Instead, think of it as improving your space. Maybe you don’t have time to clean out your entire closet, but you can get rid of five shirts. The whole pantry might feel overwhelming to tackle, so just toss five expired food items. You get the picture, just take it one step at a time.
